UPDATE & CORRECTION 2.28.17: Stockton University contacted ACprimetime to let us know they’re NOT a ‘Sanctuary Campus’ as we originally reported. But…. the Stockton Student Senate really wanted that official status. They were told NO. Instead….. all parties agreed on something called ‘Stockton Safe’.

Stockton University has agreed that the university is “Stockton Safe,” providing a safe zone for all students, faculty, and staff regardless of immigration status. The university, to the fullest extent permitted by law, protects the identity and information of all members of our community.
Recent protests at Stockton University‘s main campus were encouraging Dr. Kesselman to designate the school as a sanctuary campus for undocumented students.
What is a Sanctuary Campus? Educational facility that adopts policies to protect students who are undocumented immigrants. The term is modeled after “sanctuary city“, a status adopted by over 30 municipalities.
From FEB. 7, 2017 PRESS OF AC > Student Senate President Maryam Sarhan said she is not deterred by those in opposition to her views and that she welcomes free speech. Sarhan said she will work for action on Stockton becoming a sanctuary campus.
Here were the Student Senate proposed policies for a Stockton Sanctuary Campus:
- Not allowing Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers onto campus without warrant
- The refusal of campus police to enforce immigration law
- Not sharing student immigration status with ICE
- Not gathering information on immigration or citizenship status
- Provide tuition support & in-state tuition rates to DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) students
- Provide confidential legal support to students with immigration law questions & issues
CORRECTION & UPDATE 2.28.17: Representatives of Stockton University tell ACprimetime that they are NOT a sanctuary campus as we originally published, and Stockton is in FULL compliance with the law.
- Continue to allow qualifying DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) students to pay in-state resident tuition.
- Invest in faculty and staff training to support undocumented students.
- Refuse all voluntary information sharing with ICE, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
- Maintain firm limitations on ICE access to campus as specified in their “sensitive locations” policies
- Prohibit campus security & local law enforcement, representatives, faculty, and staff from inquiring about or recording an individual’s immigration status.
- Stop the use of the USCIS E-Verify system through the university to confirm photo identification and eligibility for employment.

The current US administration, with backing from Congress, could withhold federal funding for colleges. The Federal Government would do this by refusing to issue student loans to any student attending a sanctuary campuses like Stockton. The US Government could also withhold federal research grants.
According to a recent survey, 70% of Stockton undergraduate students receive financial aid from the federal government.
