A group of Atlantic City businesses are being sued by the State for environmental damages. Long term polluting of the area.

According to NJ.com, an early 20th-Century manufactured gas plant started the pollution along the Beach Thorofare.

Contaminants like lead, benzene and cyanide now lace the sediment and waters around the Deull Fuel site.

The state is suing multiple parties related to the site for natural resource damages, including South Jersey Gas, Deull Fuel, McCallister Fuels and Verizon New Jersey.

During Summer 2017, Atlantic City was the subject of another contamination event. Raw sewage was dumped into the back-channel for at least 5 straight days due to a ruptured sewer pipe. The pipes are owned by the ACUA. The land where the pipes traversed (Bader Field) is owned by the City of Atlantic City. The CRDA effectively controls Bader Field thru their use of the so-called ‘Tourism District’.

NJ Attorney General Gurbir Grewal and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Commissioner announced the filing of six separate lawsuits against Atlantic City businesses.

The lawsuits were filed in order to recover damages for the harm caused by pollution to properties, groundwater, and waterways.

The State also want to recover the costs of conducting environmental clean-ups.
