City Council of Atlantic City Preps for State Intervention

The State of New Jersey could be days away from assuming functions, powers, and privileges of the City of Atlantic City government for five years. Even though Mayor Don Guardian laid off 300 city workers and cut $50 million out of the budget, it’s apparently still not enough. The looming $170 million owed to Borgata has made matters worse.

What this all means to the City of Atlantic City:

The State may soon be able to terminate contracts, restructure debt, remove job positions, appoint or remove employees, re-negotiate union agreements, dissolve or transfer any municipal board, authority, department or commission, purchasing goods and services, amending or terminating contracts, entering into agreements with the county to share services, and filing lawsuits on behalf of the city.
