Margate is still not ready for Jitneys. On Thursday, April 21, City Commissioners delayed further talks that could bring a Jitney bus service to Margate for Summer 2016.
Safety concerns were cited. Commissioner of Public Safety John Amodeo was worried about jitney-stop locations.
Some Margate residents think jitneys would snarl traffic even though the jitneys wouldn’t run til after 6p.
A few retailers bristled and don’t think the 13 person mini-buses would serve the Margate business community. Other shot back: while it’s true that some Margate businesses are closed after 6p, the Jitney’s would be a boon to bars & restaurants. It would allow more people to experience the magic of Margate.
Benefits of a Downbeach Jitney Service:
- Quiet, natural gas burning people movers
- Reduction in DUI violations
- Reduce parking congestion & traffic
- Bring more customers to town
- Convenience amenity for Margate residents & visitors
The Margate Business Association had reportedly hoped for more Jitney input from the community.
It’s been noted by ACprimetime & DownbeachBUZZ that traditional forms of marketing have been less effective over the years due to the proliferation of online channels. Facebook & Twitter have also declined ineffective communication tools.
We could see a 30-day trial period though for the jitney service.
Ventnor Mayor Mike Bagnell would like to bring the Jitney service to his city, but Margate would have to be a part of the deal.
Candidates currently running for Ventnor office ( ImagineVentnor ) has shown interest in supporting the potential jitney service.
