Mayor Small Scrambles as Boardwalk Crime Hurts Atlantic City Rebound

For years, Atlantic City Boardwalk merchants have pleaded for more police presence. Rising crime and violence are hurting business and tourism say business owners.

Boardwalk merchants say CRDA, Casino Reinvestment Development Authority and Atlantic City officials like Marty Small and George Tibbitt haven’t done enough.

We want safety, says the Atlantic City Merchants Association. ‘We want more police patrols on the Boardwalk.’ Many claim they’re regularly threatened or robbed. Large groups of kids come in and shop-lift.

On April 1, a 12 yr old boy was inside a boardwalk store and threatening people with a knife. That’s according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.

Based on security camera video, multiple juveniles were damaging the store and assaulting people. See more at NBC10.

According to the prosecutors office, while attempting to shop lift, a 12-year-old boy pointed a knife and threatened the store owner. Shortly thereafter, the owner collapsed and died.

Police arrested the 12-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl. The children are charged with robbery, assault and other offenses.

CRDA, the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, has state authorization to oversee and manage the Boardwalk and adjacent Tourism District.

Shop owners are demanding Police substations on the Boardwalk. Response time would presumably be shortened.
