NJ Governor-elect Phil Murphy promised to legalize recreational use for people age 21 and older within the first 100 days of his administration.
Even though marijuana remains illegal in most states, State Senate President Steve Sweeney wants to get a bill approved within 100 days of Murphy’s inauguration on January 16, 2018.
In 2010, medical marijuana became legal in NJ. When Chris Christie was elected, he slowed the law’s roll-out. Christie thinks weed is a gateway drug, which leads to more harmful drug use.
$300 million in New Jersey tax revenue could come from marijuana sales.
- Medical marijuana is already legal in New Jersey. If NJ quickly legalizes recreational weed, pot sales could start as early as late 2018.
- Possession and personal use of small amounts — one ounce or less — of marijuana would be legal for people age 21+.
- The manufacture, possession or purchase of marijuana accessories, or the sale of marijuana accessories to a person who is 21+, would also be legal.
- Purchasing marijuana from a cultivation facility or a “retail marijuana store” that licensed to sell the product would be legal.
- Packaging, processing, transporting, manufacturing, displaying, or possessing marijuana or marijuana products would be legal.
- Leasing or allowing the use of property owned, occupied or controlled by any person, corporation or other entity for marijuana use, possession and manufacturing would be legal.
