‘ARTeriors’ Transforms Commercial Space into Art Gallery

Looking forward to the Atlantic City ‘ARTeriors’ exhibit on Aug, 15 & 16…. transforming commercial space into a pop-up art gallery.

Take one of the vacant commercial buildings in downtown Atlantic City, add a group of local artists, throw in some donated paints and brushes, and pizza ovens and what have you got? ARTeriors, a unique, totally “off-the-wall” art installation that will be open to the public Saturday, Aug. 15, noon-6 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 16, noon-5 p.m. Admission is free.

Located at 121 S. Tennessee Ave., ARTeriors will feature works by Greater Atlantic City artists Valeria Marcus, Glynnis Reed, Lennox Warner, Monique Colon, and members of the South Jersey Poets Collective. The installation, in a property slated for renovation, highlights the redevelopment and renewal of Atlantic City.

Warner’s installation, “Wood-fired Pizza & Disco” will be constructed with a found pizza oven, firewood, disco music, lighting, video, and pots and pans. “One of the oft-reported things about Atlantic City is the abundance of pizza and blaring discos,” says Warner.

Colon’s space will examine “both the dark and light within our city – good and bad, yin and yang – to convey that there’s art in the darkness and we have to bring it to the light. Through struggle and chaos comes beauty. If you build art culture, the community will flourish, as well as big business and small businesses.”

The South Jersey Poets Collective will include visual work from Aubrey Rahab Gerhardt and Joel Dias Porter, and member Elinor Mattern is organizing a schedule of poets who will read their works in ARTeriors during the exhibit hours.

The public is also invited to join the fun through an improvisational, interactive art project called “On the Line.” This project – built around a neighborhood clothesline – affirms that everyone can contribute to the well-being of the city: residents, guests, businesses, and churches.

ARTeriors is presented by the Atlantic City Arts Foundation, which supports arts and cultural programs that enrich the quality of life for residents and visitors. ACAF thanks Mark Callazzo of Alpha Funding Solutions, LLC and the Iron Room, for generously donating the use of the property for the exhibit.
