Council Chambers, Sept 10, 2015. Transportation Summit. Is Atlantic City finally cleaning up the mess that makes up our public transportation options? Taxis, limos, rolling chairs, trams, jitneys…even UBER?…being forced to accept a new set of rules designed to make getting around Atlantic City….safer, cleaner, fairly priced and more efficient.

  • One thing the uber representative and the city’s consultant agree on is Atlantic City is not New York City.
  • I think the phrase “language barrier” was invented specifically for this meeting.
  • And now we have a resident complaining about out-of-control rolling chair pushers
  • Uber keeps talking about how taxis and limos rip people off. Can’t argue that one
  • Limo lobbyist is discussing surge pricing, a technique which uber uses to raise fares during busy times. Taxis can’t do that (yeah right)
  • Uber has yet to explain how they are different than a taxi or limo other than a smartphone component.
  • Uber is used to getting their way by bullying. That is clearly what they’re doing here in Atlantic City.
  • Head of the limo lobby says uber insurance is no good.
  • Taxi and limo companies are asking questions about regulations that will apply to them. Uber has none of these concerns for the moment.
  • Are uber drivers employees or independent contractors?
  • Uber says the drivers are “their own boss” and “in business for themselves” and then says uber provides jobs.
  • This is Anna, head of uber New Jersey. She says AC must legalize uber to save jobs http://t.co/U8YOKHf6Vn
  • So these people destroyed a business model, the taxicab, that has worked for generations worldwide and just move on to uber?
  • Uber driver, who is a former cabbie, admits taxi drivers history of ripping off passengers is what gave taxis a bad name
  • Taxi and limo interests see their businesses slipping away. Director of L&I trying to hold the meeting together
  • And now we come to the point in our program in which a city official presents uber’s PowerPoint proposal
  • City officials and transportation consultant repeatedly defer to a future “process” which will iron out all little details and discrepancies
  • Taxi drivers will have to take drug tests if the new laws pass. Limo and jitney drivers, too.
  • Looks like Atlantic City taxi drivers will be dragged kicking & screaming into the current century and will begin to take credit cards
  • Now they’re talking about doormen getting kickbacks from limo drivers. City officials say it’s a big problem
  • Does this mean uber is getting shut out? No. Confusion ensues
  • City officials say you’re either a taxi or a limo, and uber is classified as a limo. Then they said there will be a freeze on all new limos.
  • Limo drivers are not loving the proposed changes. They’re getting agitated
  • Limos will be prohibited from picking up people unless pre-arranged by reservation
  • Interesting to see the city cracking down hard on the past transgressions of taxi drivers. Now, let’s see what they say about “limos”
  • My guess is über is here to stay. Taxis and Jitneys must adapt or die.
  • Looks like the city is finally tightening up taxi regulations after drivers have been exploited for decades by greedy owners and middlemen
  • Uber is here. Is it just me, or do they look exactly like last year’s taxi drivers? http://t.co/VmW0JkE6lA
  • @ACMayorDonGuard speaking about changes to be implemented.
