SURVEY: Should Council Allow Drinks on Atlantic City Boardwalk?

Enjoy a drink on the Boardwalk? Why not? It will certainly boost the business of Atlantic City. Opponents say this will just add to rowdy behavior.

An ordinance proposed by Councilman Kaleem Shabazz (devout Muslim & non-drinker) would permit customers to carry one drink in an open plastic container purchased from a licensed beverage establishment adjacent to the Boardwalk. The container would have to bear the name or logo of the business. What do YOU think? Take the survey. We’ll pass the results along to City Council.

This could help Atlantic City as it tries to reinvent itself after losing its casino monopoly. So-called ‘open containers’ are already legal in New Orleans, Miami, Key West…even Disney World, says resident Tom Forkin at a recent AC council meeting.

FACT: Atlantic City already allows bars, restaurants & retail outlets to serve / sell alcohol 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that politics, not real issues, are what’s potentially slowing down the process on this issue. Those on Atlantic City Council considering a run in the upcoming 2017 elections, are feeling pressure from local voters.

Will political pandering kill this ‘no-brainer’ of an idea to increase tourism in Atlantic City?

The proposed ordinance has already passed some preliminary clearances from the AC Police Dept, and other local civic, business, and community groups.
